Some scholars suggest that the best literature (art, film, etc) articulates communal or group consciousness. In other words, the tensions, conflicts, and general mood of contemporary life at a specific time and place are expressed in the most interesting literature (or film or art, etc) from that time and place. Based on the segments of Emir Kusturica’s Underground that you viewed, how would you describe the consciousness it expresses? How does the film aesthetically communicate mood, tension, and conflict? Refer to specific scenes, plot elements, characters, sound, or music, or focus on one of the stills posted below. The film trailer is also posted on the course blackboard site.
